TOPSHOP X HALPERN PAULA BODYSUIT £85

Halpern x Topshop, Everything you need to know about the high street’s hottest collaboration.

Halpern has been on my radar for four seasons for it’s bold silhouette, brash colour clashes, unapologetic opulence and sheer drama. Instantly developing industry prestige, models with legs for miles sashay one leg in black and white zebra stripes, the other in holographic pink sequins in front of fashion’s elite every show. Romantically asymmetric trains and sexy yet chilled 1970’s vibes run deep in the DNA of this ostentatious young Central Saint Martin’s graduate.

New Yorker Michael Halpern has used his signature bedazzled fabrics in each collection of his two year old brand’s life to an effect so climatic that high street gargantuan Topshop has today launched their collaboration.

“I want the whole world to feel as glam as possible” Michael commented, “in an accessible way.”

At first glance the 26 piece compilation has most of the hallmarks of a stand out Halpern collection. Bright colour and print, plenty of sequins, dipping hemlines, bustiers and a retro disco inspiration.

Some pieces hit the mark straight in the bullseye like this £75 Cheetah Sequin Top with it’s fluted sleeves and minimal x maximal hybrid design.

And my favourite piece from the collection the Holographic Sequin Jumpsuit for £145 has translated brilliantly from high end to high street.

TOPSHOP X HALPERN FARRAH sequin JUMPSUIT - TOXIC

These styles not only embody the Halpern brand but they also complement the business aim Topshop has been concentrating on recently to pry their customers away from the hugely popular 1990’s trend into another decade to buy more stuff! When oversized sweaters, bucket hats, small sunglasses and sheath dresses came back onto the scene in a massive way, Topshop was the leading provider, hastily bringing Champion, Umbro and Tommy Hilfiger back from the dead. But now Topshop needs to keep it’s customers in the stores and at the till so I have really noticed a shift in the visual merchandising both in store and online to encourage us into the 1970’s. This exciting collaboration could be just the right push we need from Topshop to move on from our Friends and Spice Girls hangover.

However not every piece is perfect…

I am not convinced these £75 pair of Velvet Trousers would really be a Halpern product and feel more like a frantic Kim K neon micro trend inspired item.

TOPSHOP X HALPERN SANDY TROUSERS - GREEN

There’s also this £145 Cheetah Sequin Jumpsuit which you can totally see the AW17 Halpern runway collection inspiration in, but it has been reduced in shape and fabric quality (obvs – because it’s a tenth of the price) but in doing so it has also somewhat lost it’s distinctive character.
